This picture shows Lake City's first veterinary clinic, owned and operated by Dr. A. M. Leek, a veterinarian who came here in the 1920s from another tobacco town, South Boston, Virginia. Mrs. Leek was from South Boston and was the daughter of a school superintendent. Dr. Leek was born and reared in New Haven, Connecticut, and was a graduate of New York University. He practiced veterinary medicine in Lake City for thirty years.

The Hotel de Dog was located midway on the east side of the second block of North Acline Avenue, approximately where Ward's Fish Market stands today. Legend has it that Dr. Leek sometimes ate his lunch while performing surgery. Legend further says that Mrs. Leek enjoyed the early movies tremendously, often talking to the images on the screen. She is sitting in the rocking chair in this picture. The little girl is unknown.

Dr. and Mrs. Leek's tombstone in Lake City Cemetery shows him living from 1870 until 1948 and her, Imogene Walkins Leek, from 1878 until 1965.
