Hill & Dixon Groceries

About the Photo

Standing on the far right, wearing a shirt, suspenders, and a tie, is Mr. Hill, one of the store’s owners. The grocery store offered a variety of goods and used eye-catching displays to attract customers.

The watermelons on the floor and the employees’ summer clothing suggest this photograph was taken during the warmer months. Displays like these helped make the store inviting and drew customers’ attention to seasonal products.

The store occupied one of the town’s oldest brick buildings, located across the street from the mercantile. Later, Mr. Earl Holloway purchased the building and converted it into a furniture store. After Holloway’s death, Larry Hawkins operated a carpet business there until his retirement.
