East Main Street 1905-1912

About the Photo

These buildings reflect Lake City's growing commercial life in the early 1900s.

On the far left is the building of Dr. S.B.W. Courtney, a local physician. His medical office occupied the second floor, while the first floor housed the drugstore he owned and operated, which opened for business in 1903.

Next was S.W. Gowdy, an ancestor of U.S. Representative Trey Gowdy. Gowdy began building a storehouse in December 1903, with construction completed in early 1904.

The third building was J.P. Matthews & Co., a retail store that sold clothing and other goods. Built in 1903, the store was destroyed by a fire that swept through Lake City in 1916. Matthews rebuilt the building in brick, and the structure remains today as a walk-through.

The fourth building, Stewart and Floyd, was a brick double store, meaning two separate businesses operated within the same building. Nearby, the Lake City Post Office stood where the Lake City sign appears in the photograph.
